In the Wilderness

If you are like me, you have had some good times and some hard times in your life. Its easy to praise God when we feel He is blessing us. What about during those difficult times?

The Bible tells us that David wrote Psalm 63 while in the wilderness likely hiding for his very life. It is even possible that this was when he was hiding from his own son, Absalom, who desired to kill the anointed king and take his place. This would have been such a grievous time for David torn between desiring his own safety and heartbroken from his son's disregard for his father and for God's plan.

Even though he was going through a rough patch, one which few of us can relate to, David earnestly sought after God, longed for God, and sung praises to God. He even meditated on the Lord. What an amazing example! He wrote, "my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water." David desired God with all his being, clinging to Him, in spite of his circumstances.

I want to feel this deep devotion and thirst no matter the frustrations or hardships life brings. I want to "rely only on God (2 Corinthians 1:9)." What are some ways we can prepare ourselves during the good times so we are praising God during the hard times? If you're in a rough patch now I hope you find these helpful and comforting:
  • Memorizing scripture can not only help protect you from sinning against God but it can be a source of comfort and encouragement during periods of trial and hardship. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. ~ Psalm 119:11 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. ~ James 1:2
  • Sing songs of praise. It can be both soothing and attitude changing. Many of the Psalms were sung and while many have lyrics of praise for God's blessings, many are also songs about troubled times. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. ~ Psalm 46:1
  • Pray. Tell God about your problems. Just because He doesn't remove you from negative situations doesn't mean He doesn't care. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. ~ Philippians 4:6-7

  1. while the hard times stink to live through, they are my favorite relationally. My faith deepens, I hear the Spirit's voice better since I am actively listening for it, and I rely on God to get me through the trial. Hard times usually deepen my human relationships too.
