Feminine Friday: She Willingly Works Hard

Proverbs 31:13 (ESV)

Welcome back to this week's discussion on feminine behaviors from the much admired Proverbs 31 description of a wife and mother. Today we are discussing the feminine behavior "She willingly works hard." As wives and mothers, we might feel like this is one we have down to a tee, am I right? We sacrifice and we drive ourselves to perform for others. However, the key word we are going to discuss today is "willingly." Shall we?

According to the Strong's Concordance the word "willingly" found in the KJV of Proverbs 31:13 where it says she "worketh willingly with her hands" has the meaning of:

1) delight, pleasure
a) delight
b) desire, longing
c) the good pleasure
d) that in which one takes delight

I'll just cut straight to the chase and be honest with you, I don't always - and certainly not often enough - feel my heart filling with "delight, pleasure, and longing" when I am folding laundry, sweeping up half my kids' lunch off the floor, and cleaning toilets. I often lose sight of the purpose behind why I do what I do.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart,
as working for the Lord, not for men,"
Colossians 3:23 (NIV)

As wives and mothers, we have much work each day that requires our attention. In order to pursue the feminine behavior of willingly working hard, we need to adopt an attitude of delight or willingness to do the required work. Not only does it certainly make our efforts to "do him good and not evil" much easier but it is also good to tackle our daily tasks as if we are doing them for our Lord. What greater purpose could we possibly be called to than to work for the Lord? Serving our husbands and children through our daily household chores is serving our Lord!
